About us

Own Your Online is designed to help New Zealanders understand cyber security, learn why it’s important, and discover how to get protected online.

Own Your Online was created in 2023 by CERT NZ, a government agency that supports small to medium businesses and individuals who are affected (or may be affected) by cyber security incidents.

In 2024, CERT NZ was moved into the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), to form Aotearoa’s lead operational cyber security agency.

Why do we need Own Your Online?

New Zealanders are being targeted by cyber criminals more and more often these days, and despite being aware and concerned about cyber attacks, a third of us don’t know why it’s important to be secure online.

Most of us take care of the things we value in life – we lock our doors, we put our seatbelts on, and we protect our loved ones – but we could do better in our digital lives.

Own Your Online aims to simplify online security, and provides relatable ‘how to’ guides and information to help New Zealanders:

  • understand the most common online risks and threats
  • know how to stay protected against cyber attacks
  • check to see if something's a scam
  • get help when targeted by an attack online.

About the National Cyber Security Centre

The NCSC has always supported significant organisations in New Zealand to improve their cyber security, responding to national-level harm and advanced threats.

With the integration of CERT NZ, the agency has the mandate to support organisations of all sizes, including small businesses and everyday New Zealanders.

As a combined organisation, NCSC’s remit now is to make New Zealand a place where good cyber security happens everywhere, all the time, by everyone.
